Mental illness | How to save your child from mental illness during Covid?

As the pandemic continues, everyone is struggling to keep themselves sane and is facing some serious life disruptions. The outbreak of coronavirus has left children feeling anxious as they are deeply disturbed by these changes. Parents everywhere are looking for ways to save their children from mental illness during Covid. School closures and physical distancing is taking a toll on children mental health. Here are some tips on how to save your child from mental illness during Covid:

Keep routine in place

Experts agree that keeping routines in place is a great way to prevent mental illness in kids during Covid. Save your child by setting and sticking to a regular schedule. However, as the crisis continues and days get hotter and longer, the schedule is bound to change a bit. Still, make sure some structure is in place, for example, ensure kids are waking up, eating and going to bed at the same time. A consistent routine brings calmness during stressful times.

Be creative about new activities

You can save your child from mental illness by incorporating new and exciting activities into their routine. Moreover, you can do a puzzle together or have family game time. During Covid, you can build in some activities like exercise that will be beneficial for the entire family. As some restrictions have been relaxed now, you can take a family walk safely without allowing the kids to contact other kids or do yoga at home. Exercise is a good way to let kids’ burn energy and it also makes sure everyone is staying active.

Manage your own anxiety

If you want to save your child from mental illness, then you must keep your worries in check too. Try to manage your own anxiety as it can have a huge impact on your kids. Watch out for negative thinking and focus on solution-based thinking as it will help your entire family in these uncertain times. When you are feeling anxious, try not to talk about your concerns in front of your kids. For those moments when you are overwhelmed, try to take a short break. Take a shower or go outside the room and take a few deep breaths.

Limit consumption of news

During Covid, it is a good idea to limit the consumption of news because it has the potential to raise anxiety in your kids. Turn the TV off, keep a check on your little ones, and make sure they are not being exposed to panic-inducing posts on social media.

Stay in touch virtually

Let kids stay in touch with their friends through Skype or FaceTime as it can help prevent mental illness in them. Communication can save your child from feeling alone and mitigate the stress that comes from staying away from their peers.

Make plans

Try to be proactive. Make little plans as they can help children visualize the near future. Arrange virtual play dates for your kids, cook your child’s favorite food or plan a take-out from your little one’s favorite restaurant.

The pandemic has change many things, the way we converse with our friends, the ‘Hi-5 s’, the hangouts. All gone. However, don’t forget that people are always around us to help or to teach!
